Housing Rehabilitation Program
This service allows Cherokee Nation Housing Services to perform necessary rehabilitation work on the homes of Cherokee citizens who are unable to do the work themselves. Priority is given to the elderly, disabled and Cherokee Nation families.
Applicants in the self-help rehab program must be willing to perform the work themselves. The Cherokee Nation will provide the materials necessary for rehabilitation repairs. Cherokee citizen preference is applied to this program.
Emergency Repair Program
Emergency repairs may be provided by the Cherokee Nation if structural damage has occured of there is a health and/or safety concern for the occupant. Cherokee citizen preference is applied to this program.
Housing Accessibility Program
This program may provide persons with disabilities better use of their homes by correcting health and safety concerns. This program is for Cherokee citizens only.
Housing Improvement Program
The Housing Improvement Program (H.I.P.) is a rehabilitation program serving the most needy based on a point system. Clients recieve specific points for age, physical disability, income and number of children in the household. This program is available to all Native Americans.
- Copies of tribal citizenship cards
- Copies of Social Security cards
- Warranty or Quit Claim deed
- Title if a mobile home
- Income verification for each household member
- Doctor's statement if handicapped or disabled
Income guidelines are: 50% of the National Medial Income (NMI) for emergency services and 80% for rehabilitation services. Applicants must be a member of a federally-recognized tribe with preference given to citizens of the Cherokee Nation; live within Cherokee Nation jurisdictional boundaries and have adequate homeowner insurance.
Participants must sign a commitment agreement which will place a lien on the home requiring repayment if the home is sold. The length of the lien is based upon the useful life, which is in turn based upon the amount of funds spend on the home (This agreement is for rehabilitation services only.)
Under $5,000 -- 1 year
5,000 - 15,000 -- 5 years
15,001 - 30,000 -- 10 years
30,001 - 50,000 -- 15 years
Any structure having recieved substantial rehabilitation in the last ten years is not elibile for this program. All programs are subject to the provisions of the Housing Services Policy.
