Funded by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA), this program is designed to assist Native Americans with decent, safe, and sanitary housing with Cherokee Nation jurisdictional boundaries. Income guidelines are 80% of National Median Income (NMI) or below.
Priorities and Other Program Requirements
- Cherokee citizens; elderly or disabled applicants.
- Limited to twelve months; based on household income, household composition and county of residence.
- HACN pays a portion of rent to the owner; the tenant is responsible for the balance.
- Families are encouraged to gain self-sufficiency and required to participate in case management services.
- Criminal background check is conducted.
- Tenant is responsible for all security and utility deposits.
- Must enter into a one-year lease.
Applications are accepted at all HACN offices. Once a family completes their application and it is approved, the family must find their own housing unit. The unit must be inspected and approved by the Rental Assistance Program. The landlord must be willing to enter into a minimum of a one year contract.
